It was a very overcast and gray day in January that the Red Chair arrived at The Lost Whale Inn in Trinidad California. Throughout all of the traveling and interesting destinations, Red has met some very interesting people and furniture but no one really similar to Red. (Well, there was that big blue chair in Sonoma but heavens, there wasn’t even time to stop for a chat!).
Red Chair had become a celebrity – had traveled in style across the country – and in the process had made everyone around it treat it with such care that the everyday camaraderie and fun of just being a plain old chair had vanished. Between the press, the media and the photo shoots, there hadn’t been much time to just relax.
So it was with a sense of weariness that Red Chair arrived at The Lost Whale Inn. Happily, nothing much was going on so Red just sat around for a while. It was quite relaxing. It couldn't help but notice that there were some rather nice blue chairs outside, so, inching itself towards the window, Red tapped on the glass to get their attention.
“Hello,” Red said. “I’m just here for a short visit but I noticed that the two of you look quite friendly out there.”
“Welcome to you little red chair,” said the first blue chair. “I’m an Adirondack from the East Coast. You can call me Blue.”
The other chair chimed in: “And I’m ‘Sky Blue” – actually we’re brothers.”
“Well,” Red Chair replied, “I haven’t had much choice in where to go and how long I stay anywhere. It’s quite a whirlwind trip that I’m on.”
“Interesting,” said Blue Adirondack. “Didn’t know that a chair could travel like that. I was shipped here in a big box and honestly, I’m glad I like it here because I wouldn’t have a clue how to leave if I didn’t!”
Red Chair actually blushed, it’s red turning even a darker hue. “Well, it’s been an honor to travel like this, but honestly, I’d like to just settle down for a while, you know, just do what a chair is supposed to do!”
Sky Blue Adirondack inched towards the door… “You know, Red, as long as no humans are around, we can move a little bit, so here, push on that door and come join us.”
And Red Chair did. It sat for quite a long time between the two Adirondack brothers, just taking in the view. The Pacific Ocean, the bluffs, the beautiful peaceful cove below the bluffs, and the two brothers on each side of it.
Finally, one turned: “You know Red, it’s going to rain. We’re used to it, but you look kind of delicate.”
“Yes, I’ll need to go back inside soon,” Red Chair answered.
And it was a happy coincidence that, just at that moment, a human emerged from the doors of the Lost Whale Inn, picked Red Chair up and took it inside.
Of course, the next two days were filled with the usual exciting photo shoots. The owner set Red Chair with some guests for dinner and took a photo with them toasting. Then there was the breakfast feast. Red participated in that as well. Of course, there were the usual room shots.
But then, on the third day, a magical thing happened. It was in another of the “usual photo shoots” that Red had endured throughout the entire journey. This time the Lost Whale Inn’s sauna was being featured. Red had been placed inside with a bath robe draped around its back. “Quite lovely actually,” Red thought. Looking out through the glass windows, Red Chair saw the beautiful ocean and gardens. And there, on the lawn, looking right back, was Sky Blue Adirondack. Red thought the Adirondack seemed to hitch itself up a bit to be noticed.
“Hey Red,” Sky Blue called up to the sauna, “After you’re done there, why don’t you join me here down on the lawn for a glass of wine and a sunset. It’s our favorite time of day!”
And in no time at all, Red Chair found itself sitting next to Sky Blue at the very edge of the bluff. In between them was a bottle and two glasses of wine. In front of them was the most gorgeous sunset Red had ever seen. Being from the East Coast, Red had never seen the sun set into the ocean like that. As far as it could see – just turquoise blue, azure blue, and then the sun flaming orange and pink and mauve.
Breathlessly, Red Chair turned to Sky Blue: “This is the most beautiful place on earth, I do believe. You are so fortunate to live here!”
Sky just laughed and said: “Well, Red, I’m sure you have other beautiful places you’ll be visiting but this is certainly one of the best of them. There’s really something magical about watching the sun set every day. And we chairs are so valued at this time of day. Why we are busy, busy, busy!
Ultimately, Sky Blue and Red were returned to the ocean deck where they enjoyed the stars, the twinkly lights, and watched the other guests who were using the hot tub on the ocean deck. For the rest of that night, long after the other guests had retired for the evening, Sky and Red sat together, barely touching, and sharing a growing feeling of – how can it be described – togetherness.
The next morning, Red turned to Sky Blue: “You have to know that this has been one of the most special days of my life. I don’t think I ever want to leave here…….I don’t think I ever want to leave you, Sky!”
Sky gave her a knowing look: “You must know I feel the same way, Red. Just don’t go. You can stay with me forever.”
Sky inched even closer to Red: “Listen, we could sit together every day, enjoy the sun setting every evening, and spend hours communing with nature. Night times here it’s so dark we can watch the Milky Way. Red, please stay.”
And so it wasn’t surprising that Red said: “Of course. I would stay if it were possible. However, I have very little to do with deciding where I go next. It is all pre-arranged and I am completely bound by this tour I’ve been asked to do. I can’t stop that – I don’t even know how to!”
“No worries, Red,” replied Sky Blue. “If you wish to be with me, I know we will finally find a way to be together.”
“But how?” asked Red, “How can we be together? We’re just inanimate objects after all!”
“Yes, you’re right – to a point. But have you ever noticed how humans like to move us just where we want to be? We have some powers to influence them to place us in just the right spot for our purpose.” Let me work on this – I promise I will make something memorable happen that will secure our future together.”
Trustingly, Red leaned towards Sky Blue. “All right, I just don’t want to travel anymore without knowing that there’s something special at the end – that you are going to be part of my future.”
“Yes,” Sky Blue replied. “And to start, we need to pledge to each other our promise to be together someday.”
“But how?” asked Red Chair
“The Lost Whale Inn is known around the world for being the perfect place for romance,” said Sky Blue Adirondack. “And what better excuse for a special engagement than the meeting of a Red Chair from the East Coast and a Sky Blue Chair from the West Coast? All I have to do is push the idea into the Inn’s wedding coordinator’s corner and I know just how to do that! Once we’re engaged, I believe everyone will try to keep us together.”
Red Chair was absolutely thrilled. “Maybe this will work after all! If so, Blue Sky will have accomplished a miracle – I will never again be lonely. I will have a companion for the rest of my life as a chair.”
Red spent the night next to the fireplace in the Great Room, anxiously awaiting the news. The fireplace glowed softly and it enjoyed the warmth soaking through its legs. It was worried too – it had already been a few days and it knew that soon, someone would come pick it up and move it onto the next photo shoot.
But Sky Blue delivered. The next morning, bright and early, a beautiful young woman entered the Great Room and said: “There you are Red Chair. We have some special plans for you today. As part of your promotion, I was looking at the blue Adirondack chair outside and I think that it would be perfect for you two to get engaged on the bluff overlooking the ocean!”
Red couldn’t believe it. Sky Blue Adirondack had worked its magic – that a chair could even begin to do this was beyond Red’s comprehension. But then, this was after all The Lost Whale Inn and hadn’t Red found it to be a magical place during its stay so far?
So Sky Blue Adirondack pledged its troth to Red Chair on a Friday morning – overlooking the Pacific Ocean. A gentle breeze caressed them and they could hear the sea lions barking in the distance. Champagne was set next to them along with a beautiful bouquet of flowers.
The humans left them on the bluff to spend some time together. They just leaned into each other, sitting side by side. The sun slowly set in the West and the sky deepened into all manner of pinks and orange.
“Red, I’ll love you forever, you know that,” said Sky Blue. “And my promise to you is that my love will be as eternal as the great redwood trees that live here in Redwood National Park. I will love you forever. You and I – our love will be like the redwoods, greater every year and lasting till the end of time.”
“I know Sky Blue, and I’ll love you too. I’ll never forget our time here,” said Red Chair. “I promise that we’ll be together when I finish this tour. Our love might be just between two humble chairs, but it is true love nevertheless. And true love knows no boundaries, can overcome any obstacles and reaches across any distance that will be between us.”
