Lost Whale Inn
Trinidad, CA
January 13th- February 3rd, 2015
Located just minutes from Redwood National Park, the beautiful Lost Whale Inn sits and awaits for incoming guests looking to get away for a spell. With gorgeous views, lush acres of gardens, tide pools to explore and hiking trails all around, the Red Chair could not wait to visit! Although Red arrived on an over cast afternoon, the Red Chair loved getting a chance to meet the wonderful staff and innkeepers who proceeded to share stories all about the interesting history of the property. After a tour of the Inn, Red could not wait to get out an explore the area! Along with an amazing time, the Red Chair also met a certain special blue chair.. click here to read all about the Red Chair falling in love.
Carter House Inn
Eureka, CA
January 2-12th, 2015
The Red Chair always appreciates when an inn has an interesting history behind it and the Carter House Inn is definitely one of those kinds of places. This structure was originally built as the Murphy House in San Francisco some time between 1884-1885. Then in 1906 the Murphy House was destroyed by the famous San Francisco earthquake and fires. Years later in 1978 Mr. Mark Carter discovered the Murphy House plans at an antique shop and decided to give this structure a new home in Eureka, California. This unique and special building, along with its amazing staff of course, provides contemporary, luxury hotel lodging at its finest. The Red Chair also was able to enjoy Restaurant 301 which is right on premise and is known for its award winning wine list of over 3,400 different wine selections. The Red Chair unfortunately did not get to try them all this time, so it will just have to keep coming back! One of the Red Chair's favorite parts about this stay was the option to have turn down service and a surprise chocolate left on its pillow. Talk about being spoiled!
Gingerbread Mansion Inn
Ferndale, CA
December 23rd, 2014 - January 2nd, 2015
This year for the Holidays the Red Chair decided to stay at the beautiful Gingerbread Mansion Inn of Ferndale, CA. Arriving in the midst of Holiday spirit the Red Chair was in awe, it was just absolutely perfect! After a short rest, the Red Chair went downstairs for afternoon tea and wine. Red joined guests as they sat near the fire and enjoyed the snug atmosphere, mingling and chatting with each other. The history of the inn was so interesting and the rooms so unique the Red Chair decided to extend its stay through New Years just so it could try a new room each night. Each room, to Red's delight, was different in design and decor! During a stroll on Main Street, Red experienced the charm of the Victorian town of Ferndale, with its beautiful boutiques, unique shops and museums. At night, Innkeeper Seta took the Red Chair down the street to see the tallest lit Christmas Tree in the nation, it was really cool to see. The red Chair spent a busy and adventurous holiday season at the Gingerbread Mansion, but unfortunately all good things must come to an end. The Red Chair loved every moment of its luxurious stay and would love to come back and visit again someday.
Benbow Historic Inn
Garberville, CA
December 17-22nd, 2014
December went by way too quickly for the Red Chair Travels. That is mostly due to the fact that venturing farther north in California has been amazing and you know what they say, time flies when your having fun! The Benbow Historic Inn is a premiere North Coast Hotel in the heart of California Redwood Country and was recently hosting the Red Chair Travels. With its easy access to hiking, birding, kayaking and strolling through the magnificent forests of the Redwood State Parks, not to mention the 50-acres of scenic views right on the property, the Red Chair always had plenty to see and do. Since the visit was just before Christmas, Red got a chance to see all of the beautiful decorations and join in the holiday festivities with the staff and other guests. The Benbow Historic Inn was just a beautiful place to rest and relax among the Redwood trees, it was definitely an experience to remember!
Brewery Gulch Inn
Mendocino, CA
December 12-16th, 2014
The Brewery Gulch Inn of Mendocino, CA welcomed the Red Chair Travels on a drizzly Friday in December. The Red Chair was so excited because it knew that Innkeeper Guy was going to show off some of the very best that Mendocino has to offer and Red could not wait to get started! After warming up by the fire in front of the inn's iconic glass and steel fireplace, Red explored the tree's ornament collection before donning a sweatshirt and heading out to the deck to check out the surf in Smuggler's Cove. Next the group made a beeline for town to pay a visit to a Mendocino touchstone, Sallie Mac. After purchasing a jaunty beret, they headed over to the local watering hole, Dick's Place, where the bartender pulled a cold draft of locally-brewed Red Seal for the weary traveler. Calling it a night, we headed back to the inn for some much needed relaxation and rest! Despite the rain, Red wanted to check out Big River to see where the old growth redwood that was used to build the inn came from. Eco-salvaged from sinker logs that lay under the river for 150 years, this wood is what gives the Brewery Gulch Inn its incredible character. We were hoping to take Rd up river on a custom-built redwood canoe courtesy of Catch A Canoe, but the weather proved to be a little too challenging. After checking out all of the cool boats, Red decided to head back and take a tour of the Brewery Gulch property. They began their tour in the gardens at the from to the inn, then journeyed down the trail to the ponds at the lower part of our property. There Red relaxed by the pond enjoying an afternoon shower. Although a bit rainy it was still a lot of fun to check out the beauty of this special area, and it was even cooler to see it all decked out for the holidays!!
Elk Cove Inn & Spa
Elk, CA
December 7-11th, 2014
When the Red Chair arrived to the beautiful Elk Cove Inn & Spa in Elk, California, it was quite weary. After wine tasting and loads of wonderful shopping in the Anderson Valley, Red was a bit worn. Lo and behold, during the Elk Cove's cocktail hour Red met Aqua the Inn's resident and brightly colored chair. They shared martinis by the Christmas tree but Red was a bit embarrassed by its appearance. So Red decided to book a massage and sauna in the spa. Voila!! Red was all fresh and much better looking! After breakfast the next morning Red went looking for Aqua. After chatting about what to see in the area they decided to head out for a coastal drive. Such beautiful scenic views awaited, it was actually quite romantic. Upon their return they decided to sit out by the gazebo for a while to chat about the Elk Cove Inn and to learn more about the amazing innkeepers. Both Red and Aqua got a bit hungry so they decided to make it into a picnic on the oceanfront picnic table, and my was it a gorgeous view! The end of Red's stay came too soon and it was tough to say goodbye to Red's new friends but there is still so much traveling to do! Thanks Aqua and the Elk Cove Inn & Spa for the wonderful hospitality for those few amazing days!
Featherbed Railroad Bed and Breakfast Resort
Nice, CA
November 27th - December 1st
Spending Thanksgiving at the Featherbed Railroad Bed and Breakfast Resort sounded just absolutely perfect to the Red Chair Travels this year so that is just what it did! Here the Red Chair celebrated with family and friends and of course scrumptious food. After dinner the Red Chair went back to its own private railroad caboose (an actual caboose!!) and slept in a deep and peaceful food coma. The next morning, Red started the day off right with a jacuzzi tub with a new rubber ducky friend before heading out to observe Mount Konocti, an inactive but not dormant volcano that has Clear Lake in its shadow. Mount Konocti is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire and is still plenty active with the largest geothermal energy plant in the US using the hot underground forces to create clean, renewable energy with water filtered from waste water. It's really, really and green energy source! How cool to see a Volcano right here! The Red Chair also spent Thanksgiving weekend getting the Featherbed Railroad Bed & Breakfast Resort ready for Christmas with decorations all over. In fact, Santa's caboose has been prepped and is ready for famous visitors and the elves are scheduled to come and make sure the room meets their strict standards for this yuletime tradition. It was so much fun getting a chance to become part of the family and decorate for the Holidays and also it was
Hidden Oak Inn
Sonoma, CA
October 25-30th, 2014
The Red Chair was excited to visit the Hidden Oak Inn for a few days of fun in the sun and of course to experience the wines of the world famous Sonoma Valley Wine Country. Combined with its neighbor Napa Valley, Sonoma is home to award winning wineries, fabulous restaurants, boutique shopping and so much more. Literally minutes from downtown Sonoma, the Hidden Oak Inn is just one of the many incredible places to stay throughout the Sonoma Valley. Whether it's a wedding, wine tasting adventure, spa retreat or Girl's Weekend, Sonoma is an incredible year-round vacation destination, as the Red Chair quickly observed. Innkeepers Valerie and Don along with their two pint-sized Havanese, welcomed the Red Chair to their restored California bungalow. With its three guest rooms, all with private baths, Red felt complete comfort and understood why the Hidden Oak Inn is one of Sonoma's most popular B&B's. Each morning the Red Chair was served a sumptuous breakfast in the lovely restored breakfast room. Afternoons included wine tastings and hors d'oerves either out on the front porch or in the peaceful backyard with its lovely swimming pool and spa. The next day the Red Chair decided to venture out from the Sonoma Valley to check out the Old Sugar Mill in Clarksburg. Red was invited for the annual paella party hosted by Three Wine Company and was welcomed to the festivities by wine club members, wine tasters, foodies and new friends of all types! With picturesque backdrops for photos the historic and completely restored Old Sugar Mill is the perfect destination for a day of delicious wine tasting or hosting a party. Steeped in history, the wineries at the Old Sugar Mill are a bridge to the rich agricultural heritage of the region, whose vineyards are staking their claim alongside the great wine growing areas of the world! The next day it was back to Sonoma Valley and time to hit the Plaza. Surrounded on all sides by winery tasting rooms, world-class restaurants, day spas and plenty of boutique shopping, the Sonoma Plaza if full of things to do! Next it was off to the Cornerstone Gardens, another fabulous place you just have to visit. Here the Red Chair got the chance to meet the famous Big Blue Chair and they became fast friends. After a quick selfie with Big Blue, Red was off to wander the grounds, exploring the imaginative and creative garden-scapes. After an hour of wandering it was then onto some of the unique shops of Sonoma such as the Artefact Design and Salvage and Potter Green and Co. to do a bit of browsing. Red then hit a few of the tasting rooms: Keating, Meadowcroft, Posiedon Vineyard and Obsidian Ridge before heading to Park 121 to have a delicious lunch prepared by renowned chef Bruce Reizenman. Yum. Check out our blog to read about the Red Chair's Crossfit experience! Back at the Hidden Oak Inn the Red Chair packed up, reluctant to leave the fun and beauty of Sonoma behind, but Red knows it will be back to visit innkeepers Valerie and Don again someday.
The Inn on First
Napa, CA
October 15-17th, 2015
The Red Chair Travels was super excited to spend time relaxing at The Inn on First and enjoying all that the Napa Valley has to offer. Red started off its first day by sitting by the fireplace to hear innkeepers Jim and James discuss life in Napa. The mornings are quite cool but by afternoon temperatures rise from 55 degrees to 90 degrees or more! This makes Napa Valley an ideal location to grow grapes, maturing all day and slowing down at night. This allows the grapes to hang on to the vines longer so they develop greater complexity and flavor. Soon it was time for breakfast and the best part was that Red came to visit just in time for Huckleberry season! Chef Jim made his amazing Huckleberry Fritters and Red just could not get enough! After breakfast the welcome committee (the three lovable miniature schnauzers who are residents at The Inn on First) and Chef Jim took the Red Chair on a walk around the neighborhood which is part of the beautiful downtown district of Napa where there are homes dating back to the 1800's. Next it was onto the Napa Valley Visitor's Center for an overview of the valley, then through Veteran's Park that overlooks the river, and finally down to the River Front parkway for a riverside view lunch at Angele, a lovely California French restaurant with great cuisine. After lunch it was time for a Platypus Tour which you can read all about on Red's blog! At the end of the day Red returned to the inn to enjoy a bit of downtime with freshly baked cookies, the tea bar and their baby grand piano. After entertaining the other guests Red decided it was time for a quick evening walk back to the Riverfront for dinner at Morimoto Napa. Iron Chef Morimoto is the original US Iron Chef who helped develop the series and today has this amazing restaurant here in Napa. On the way home Red bumped into the Big Chair of Napa who added a few more things to Red's to do list while it is still in town, good thing Red has another day to stay and play! On the last day of the Red Chair's visit Innkeeper Jamie took Red on the 5-Hour Transportation Package in his Ford Flex. Out of the many many wineries Red could choose from they decided to visit the Jarvis Winery, for its high-end winery built completely underground and reminded the Red Chair of "The Hobbit". Next stop was up to Spring Mountain to visit Pride Mountain Winery which sits between Napa and Sonoma and must process the grapes from each county in separate equipment that is stored on the proper side of the county line. Here you find delicious blended wines with big bold flavors, yum! What a way to end Red's stay here, enjoying the most perfect Fall day with Innkeepers Jim and Jamie and a beautiful picnic complemented by the most amazing wines. Hopefully Red will be able to return soon!
Dunbar House, 1880 Bed & Breakfast Inn
Murphys, CA
September 24-30th, 2014
When the Red Chair arrived to the Dunbar House, 1880, innkeepers Rich and Arline didn’t even have a chance to bring Red into the 5 bedroom Victorian Italianate Inn, as Red’s attention was completely focused on the string of Mopar cars parked all over the Dunbar property. Who knew that Red was a muscle car lov’n kind of chair! Members of the Inn's classic car club were all here at Dunbar House for their yearly car cruise, and were waiting to greet Red upon arrival. Imagine Red’s surprise when about 30 hot rods revved their engines as a welcome! Red went from one red hot car to another, and posed for photos with each. After all of the excitement, Red was happy to relax in the parlor listening to other guests talk about the fun they had hiking through Calaveras Big Trees State Park, riding the Zip Line and exploring the caves at Moaning Caverns, and visiting galleries, museums, fine restaurants, and unique shops. Red felt right at home watching guests work on a puzzle in the parlor while they were enjoying some best wines Murphys has to offer. Red was surprised to learn that Murphys is an up and coming wine mecca, with wines that are receiving high awards throughout the entire wine industry, and there are over 2 dozen tasting rooms, all within a short 1 to 2 minute stroll from the Dunbar House! Tuesday night is wine and music night at Alchemy Restaurant in Murphys, where Red could be found enjoying the music, ambiance and meeting new friends. Twisted Oak Winery was the featured wine at Alchemy, and Red received lots of attention from the Twisted Staff. Donning a Twisted Oak Calaveras Rosé Skull t-shirt, Red happily posed for photos with the group. Red was even awarded their Twisted Rubber Chicken! Waking to wonderful aromas promising an unforgettable breakfast, Red migrated to the newly renovated dining room where guests were served a gourmet sit down breakfast of fresh seasonal fruit, our own homemade mustard & sage sausage, cheese soufflé, warm berry cobbler, coffee and juice. Delicious! After breakfast, the smell of freshly baked cookies drew Red into their unique kitchen, which is reminiscent of cooking in “Grandma’s kitchen,” to join the cook while she was preparing cookies for the guests. The beautiful floral gardens are the jewels of the Dunbar property, where Red sat in a perfect sense of relaxation, comfort and ease, listening to the soothing sounds of the water fountains while watching the birds and squirrels play. Although Red was a little mischievous in the garden, it was the perfect ending to a great visit.
The Groveland Hotel
Groveland, CA
September 1-9th, 2014
The Red Chair Travels had a playful time at The Groveland Hotel, enjoying the ambiance of our historic Gold Rush -era property, and the little town of Groveland. The lazy fall days were perfect for sunning on the veranda and dinner with friends, old and new. The only trouble came when Red was put in jail for a little while, but Red quickly made friends with the Sheriff and got out early for good behavior! This historic hotel is just 23 miles from Yosemite National Park which was an awesome day trip for the Red Chair. The Groveland Hotel has such a unique and interesting history which the Red Chair found most fascinating! Built as a trading post in 1849 this structure went through many periods of change which includes transforming into a Saloon, Ranger Station, a Gambling House and more. This is such a special and historical place which is probably why their resident ghost, Lyle, has never left room 15. Red was a bit too scared to stay in a haunted room this time but it will definitely be back again and the next time Red is determined to meet Lyle!
The Inn at Locke House
Lockeford, CA
August 19-23rd, 2014
The Red Chair was quite impressed when it arrived at the historic and beautiful Inn at Locke House! This neo-Georgian all-brick 22 room structure and California landmark (which is on the National Register of Historic Places) is full of interesting artifacts and history from the original family that built this gorgeous home. Be sure to ask about it when you visit! Red ventured into the gardens for a picnic and enjoyed seeing the variety of California native heirloom flowers and trees. Next Innkeeper Lani whisked the Red Chair off to the Civil War re-enactment (click here to see all the details!) Early the next morning the Red Chair was off to visit Lodi Lake to see some of the waterfowl and kayaks on the Mokelumne River (which also flows not too far from the Inn). Like any tourist to the area, Red just had to have its picture taken beneath the Lodi Arch before Red began to explore the charms of downtown Lodi. The Red Chair learned about Japanese influences and contributions to the San Joaquin Valley when it spent time relaxing and meditating at the Japanese Garden in beautiful Micke Grove Regional Park. Late afternoon found the Red Chair posing with classic cars are the original A&W Rootbeer stand in Lodi. It didn't take long for Red to enjoy the entire rootbeer float...yumm! The tour came to an end at the Wine and Visitors Center where Red toured a vineyard classroom and then sipped some of Lodi's award winning wines. Unfortunately, as always, each stop must come to an end but Red will definitely be back again to see more of this beautiful place and maybe it will partake in the re-enactment next year!
East Brother Light Station Bed and Breakfast
Point Richmond, CA
August 6-11th, 2014
For over 133 years the East Brother Light Station has been an active light station protecting the waters in the straight between the San Francisco and San Pablo Bays. It sits on its own little island about a 10 minute boat ride from land and 30 minutes from downtown San Francisco. Thirty years ago the Coast Guard created a non-profit Dinner and Bed & Breakfast element to assist with the upkeep and ongoing restoration of this beautiful California Victorian Light House. Red thinks this was such a great way to invite guests to share in such a cool and unique light station experience! The boat ride over was just so charming and the views from both the boat and the Light Station itself of the San Francisco skyline, Mount Tamalpais, and the Marin Coastline were spectacular! And of course the hosts for the weekend were just wonderful and made it such a pleasant stay! The Red Chair Travels will definitely be back again someday.
Golden Gate Hotel
San Francisco, CA
August 1-5th, 2014
The Red Chair Travels couldn't help but leave a piece of its heart in San Francisco! What a beautiful place, full of so many exciting things to do and places to see. Red experienced the hills, the crowds, and the famous fog of San Francisco. Luckily Red had some of the very best tour guides in the area allowing Red to experience some of the local flavor that it might not find in any guidebook. When the Red Chair arrived to the Golden Gate Hotel the owners and their "Staff Members" Pip, Cookie, and Pasty all greeted the Red Chair with wide open arms and huge smiles! They gave Red a tour, including a ride in their gorgeous 100-year old historic birdcage elevator and then showed Red to a lovely room where it will stay for the next few days. After getting settled Red headed down to the parlor for their afternoon tea service. The evening was full of getting to know Reds wonderful hosts and going over the itinerary, Red was too excited to get much rest that night. First thing in the morning Red was ready to go! The Red Chair headed to the Ferry Building to check out the Farmers Market and many interesting shops, then Red jumped onto a ferry for a day trip in sunny Sausalito. Day number two was all about checking out the iconic pieces that make up San Francisco. So Red took a ride on a cable car and headed to Fisherman's Warf to visit Boudin to try their famous bread-bowl of clam chowder! Next it was onto visit the beautiful Golden Gate Bridge, but while on the way the group took a quick detour to the Aquatic Park Pier for a quick glance at Alcatraz. Unfortunately Red could not get a ticket to take a tour of the famous prison, Innkeepers John and Renate explained tickets for those tours sell out weeks in advance! We will just have to put it on the bucket list for next time! Fortunately, it was still clear and sunny as Red approached Crissy Field and walked up Torpedo Warf for an amazing view of the Golden Gate Bridge! On the way back to the hotel, they made a quick stop over to the infamously curvy Lombard Street, which was very cool to see in person, and also they stopped at the famous Castro district. The last day was dedicated the more local hidden gems, to read more about Lover's Lane, Wood Line, Diamond Height's Billy Goat Hill, Twin Peaks and the Moraga Mosaic Steps, head over to our blog page to learn more! The Red Chair ended this wonderful stay with an evening stroll along the Embarcadero waterfront to the world's largest light sculpture, artist Leo Villareal's The Bay Lights. With the Bay Bridge twinkling behind Red, it headed toward the very last stop, Ghirardelli Square, for a famous Ghirardelli Chocolate Sunday. At check out the next morning Pip, the hotel manager, was there to send Red off on its next adventure with a new tee-shirt so Red would always remember its stay in San Francisco!
Landis Shores Oceanfront Inn
Half Moon Bay, CA
July 27-31st, 2014
The Landis Shores Oceanfront Inn welcomed the Red Chair with wide open arms and such warm hospitality! Red was so excited about being right on the beach in beautiful Half Moon Bay. Each night the Red Chair fell asleep to the sound of waves crashing onto the shore. The great thing about this location was that historic Main Street in downtown Half Moon Bay was just 2.5 miles down the road. This made it a perfect retreat to an ocean-side oasis but then not too far from the excitement of all kinds of shops, galleries, restaurants, book stores, coffee houses and other fun activities in downtown.
The Red Chair and Innkeeper Ellen decided to check out the tide pools at Fitzgerald Marine Reserve at low tide, which was so much fun! Just shy of 4 miles north, it is a great place to see the life that lives in the Pacific Ocean tide pools compared to back home. Red learned that Purisima Creek Redwoods and a number of other fabulous hiking spots surround the Landis Shores Oceanfront inn, and the beautiful coastal trail is just steps away for biking, hiking, jogging, or walking for miles along the scenic coastline, Red will just have to try to do as many different activities as it can on this trip. Also Red learned there are a whole bunch of wonderful restaurants within a four mile radius of the Inn, including Zagat rated Cafe Gibraltar, Pasta Moon, Sam's Chowder House, Mezzaluna Italian Restaurant, Main Street Sushi, Miramar Beach Restaurant, It's Italia, La Costanera, Cetrella and Moss Beach Distillery, so many to choose from! Being the golf enthusiast that it is, the Red Chair wondered about the local Half Moon Bay Golf Links. It happens to be only five miles south of the inn and there is also a driving range nearby too. On the Red Chair's last day they took a trip to the Pillar Point Harbor in Princeton by the Sea, which was only a mile from the Landis Shores Oceanfront Inn. Here Red checked out a few different restaurants and also a few interesting activities such as whale watching and fishing trips, and also kayak and canoe excursions. Half Moon Bay definitely has too much to do for such a short stay! Next time Red will have to come for a longer visit.

Historic Sand Rock Farm Bed & Breakfast
Aptos, CA
July 19-22nd, 2014
The Red Chair paid Sand Rock Farm Bed and Breakfast a visit for a few wonderful days of rest and relaxation. After being welcomed on the deck, Red learned that there was to be a beautiful wedding ceremony happening during its stay. Immediately Red went into hospitality mode and offered any assistance it could, the Red Chair sure does love a wedding! The next morning Red decided to check out Redwood Grove and visit the giant redwood that resides there. Red wonders if they could possibly be related!
It headed to the 1887 Barrel Aging Cellar to see the chairs were already set, ready for the Wedding Ceremony, but there was still plenty to do in the Wine Meadow. The Red Chair was right in the thick of it as the tables and chairs were set up for the reception. After the flowers were placed and the 100 guests began to arrive, the Red Chair took the opportunity to share in some pre-ceremony fun. Guests moved from the ceremony to the Meadow for the feasting, and so did the Red Chair. After dancing in the Cellar and the guests had all gone, it was time for the Red Chair to help with the take down and clean up. Another job well done with the Sand Rock Farm wedding team and their helper, our Red Chair! Not only did the Red Chair get to help put on a beautiful wedding, it also went up to the orchard to pick some ripe plumbs before the squirrels and birds take their share. All good visits must come to an end sometime and saying good-bye to the Sand Rock Farm Bed and Breakfast was quite tough! Red will be sure to come back again someday.

Jabberwock Bed & Breakfast Inn
Monterey, CA
July 15-18th, 2014
`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves did gyre and gimble in the wabe: all mimsy were the borogoves, and the mome raths outgrabe. - Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll
At the Red Chair’s first arrival at the Jabberwock Inn, innkeepers, Lauren and Rick, greeted Red at the front door. After a quick tour of the historic, Alice-and-Wonderland-themed home, Rick helped Red carry its luggage upstairs to Red's king room, the Borogove suite. That evening, Red joined Rick and Lauren for hors d’oeuvres, games, and puzzles, during which, Red asked for suggestions of what to do and where to go for dinner. Lauren suggested Red walk the short 4 blocks down to the famous Cannery Row named after Steinbeck’s novel of the same name. Red took up her idea and enjoyed admiring all the shops in the historic canneries as well as eating at one of the great seafood restaurants on the water. When Red returned back to the Inn, Red found cookies and milk waiting to be snacked on before bed. In the morning, the innkeepers took Red to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, where the Red Chair swayed with the miniature kelp forest, met three octopuses in the new Tentacles exhibit, and learned about ways to help sustain the marine life. Reds favorite, however, was the 60s-styled psychedelic Jellies exhibit! After the aquarium, Red had some time to spare before returning to the Jabberwock for social hour so Red and Lauren decided on a fun photo shoot. Read more about it in our Blog! Red and Lauren finished just in time to return to the Jabberwock for a game of chess before social hour. Red won the game and, feeling hungry, decided to join the other guests for wine and some aromatic olive and parmesan crostinis. Red loved socializing with everyone, but eventually grew tired. Red went to the suite and cuddled up in its king-sized bed for a good night’s rest before traveling to the next destination. Red had a wonderful time at the Jabberwock Inn loving the history of the Inn, its central location, and the phantasmagorical home, itself.
"O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!" The Red Chair chortled in its joy as it went on its way to the next adventure.

The Vagabond's House Inn
Carmel, CA
July 10-14th, 2014
The Red Chair was so excited to visit the Vagabond's House Inn in Carmel, CA. When Red finally arrived Innkeeper Thomas greeted Red with a warm welcome and a full itinerary (the best way to be greeted of course!) After a tour of the Inn and shown to its room, Red was ready to explore! Red was so excited to be here and ended up taking so many pictures, posing with local people and some of the beautiful local buildings. A trip to Cottage Sweets was much needed, they have so many delicious treats. It is amazing how Red keeps its figure with such a sweet tooth! Following this tasty stop they took a walking tour of the downtown Carmel-by-the-sea and made some new friends outside of the City Hall. The next afternoon Red spent quite a bit of time at the white sand Carmel Beach before settling into a nice bath back at the Vagabond's House. Notice in the bath, Red read through the book of travels before settling into a luxurious night's sleep. Waking up refreshed Thomas and Red decided to head out for a hike up Bottcher's Gap and Skinner Ridge in Big Sur, for a Pacific view from 4,000 feet. After returning to the Vagabond's House, Red enjoyed afternoon wine and cheese hour among friends in the courtyard before having Randal assist with typing a letter home. Being here in Carmel-by-the-sea was just so relaxing and lovely, Red has decided it will definitely come back again soon!
Ragged Point Inn & Resort
Ragged Point, CA
July 6-9th, 2014
Located directly above the Pacific Ocean and sporting tremendous ocean and sunset views the Ragged Point Inn & Resort treated the Red Chair Travels like one of its own family members. Red had such a wonderful time exploring, climbing, and enjoying the wonderful hospitality of the inn. Red would sit for hours and just become entranced by the stunning views here, Red could get used to this!
Justin Vineyard & Winery
Paso Robles, CA
July 1-5th, 2014
On the Red Chairs journey up the California coast, it gained an even larger appreciation of wine and enjoyed the beauty and bounty of Paso Robles with a stay at the JUST Inn at JUSTIN Vineyards & Winery. Red visited over Independence Day and celebrated in wine country style by cozying up to a friendly local over a bottle of a favorite summer wine, JUSTIN Rosé, and taking in the breathtaking beauty of the estate vineyards. What an amazing way to celebrate the 4th of July! Tasting Room Manager Chris Jahns hosted Red on a private vineyard tour where Red enjoyed the serenity of the vines and learned about Justin Vineyard's grape growing practices. Red took a few contemplative moments in the vineyard to reflect back on its journeys and was sent off by the JUSTIN team with a going away party in its honor in the JUSTIN Wine Society Lounge and Caves where Red shocked everyone with its fierce bean bag toss skills! Who knew a chair could be so good at bean bag toss?! After all this fun came to an end, it was time for Red to continue on the journey up the Central Coast. Along the drive, Red stopped at the famous Elephant Seal Vista Point in San Simeon to admire the Pacific Ocean and the beached elephant seals. Red had such a great time, it would love to come visit again!
The Cass House Inn & Restaurant
Cayucos, CA
June 27-31st, 2014
After arriving at the Cass House Inn and Restaurant and a little rest the Red Chair emerged from its luxurious accommodations and decided to wander around the gardens and house. First, Red stopped by the kitchen to see what was being prepared for dinner, the Chef gave the Red Chair a quick cooking lesson before sending Red into the garden. The Red Chair sat in the garden for most of the afternoon, it was very impressed with the culinary beds and couldn’t wait to see how the produce was used for dinner later that night. The manager spotted Red in the garden and asked it to babysit for a while (Red is a pro sitter), and while Red enjoyed its time with Baby Lorenzen, it needed a quick nap to recharge before dinner. There were many chairs in the house for dinner that night, and the Red Chair loved getting to know them all along with all of their travel stories. The tasting menu exceeded expectations, it was a dining experience Red would never forget. The Red Chair was sad to leave the Cass House, it wished it could have stayed longer, but Red was off to another great Inn and was excited for a new adventure!
Garden Street Inn
San Luis Obispo, CA
June 22-26th, 2014
The Red Chair was so excited when it arrived at the Garden Street Inn, a beautiful Victorian-style Bed and Breakfast in the heart of downtown San Luis Obispo. After checking in, Red took a little tour of the cozy guest rooms and charming features of the Inn, played a bit of piano in the Goldtree Library and relaxed outside in the front garden. The next day Red joined guests for a hearty breakfast in the McCaffrey Morning Room and caught up on central coast news in the local papers. Later on Red was very helpful when it came time to bake cookies, which are placed on the guests' doors in ribbon-tied bags every night. In honor of Red, the special treat was red velvet sandwiches, filled with homemade whipped cream cheese frosting and edged with crushed pecans, delicious! Day three was a busy one and included some downtown fun at Bubble Gum Alley, a stop at the Ah Louis General Store front in what was once the Chinatown District, a visit to Cal Poly Technical University campus and finally a trip to the beach at Spooner's Cove in Montana de Oro State Park. Red's final day at the Garden Street Inn started with an invigorating hike on nearby Bishop Peak, where Red got in harness for its first ever rock climbing adventure. Afterward, Red took a break at a favorite local watering hole, SLO Brew, for a drink with friends and locals and then headed out to the Thursday Farmer's Market. At the Market Red strolled down the main thoroughfare of historic downtown SLO, Higuera Street, to shop for locally grown produce, enjoy live entertainment and grab a bite at one of the restaurant booths. It was quite a pleasant stay and it was hard to say good by but how could the Red Chair say no to a cruise in a convertible up Highway 1 to the next stop?! The Red Chair Travels will definitely be back again someday!
The Casitas Estate
Arroyo Grande, CA
June 18-21st, 2014
The first morning of the Red Chair's stay at The Casitas Estate was a magical misty morning. It was really beautiful to see the Tally Vineyard's Pinot Noir and Chardonnay covered in this blanket of mist and through out the morning hanging by the poolside, Red just watched it lift ever so slowly to reveal a spectacular view of even more vineyards! While enjoying the morning innkeeper Tony mentioned there are over 15 vineyards within a 15 minute drive. After hearing that Red decided it was time to get ready for the day so it would have time to visit as many of those vineyards as possible! Luckily Red was in town just in time for the Slo Wine Country's Roll Out the Barrels celebration, a weekend full of delicious wines, local food, entertainment and tons of fun! Red got a chance to hang out with a few different local companies such as Biddle Ranch Winnery, House of Bread, Claiborne and Churchill Winery, Two Cooks Catering, Sinor LaVallee, Chamisal Vineyards and the Tactical Thirst Response Unit of Central Coast Brewing. It was such a wonderful and busy day tasting all of their delicious goodies! Most of the Red Chair's time was spent poolside or hanging out in the beautiful garden at the Casitas Estate. It was just a fabulous time to relax, enjoy the view and get to know the area a little better!
Ballard Inn & Restaurant
Ballard, CA
June 14-17th, 2014
With the Santa Ynez Valley being steeped in history, the innkeepers of the Ballard Inn and Restaurant thought it would be best to introduce the chair to many of the western heritage spots within the valley. It all began with the trail in the historic township of Ballard, home to the Ballard Inn and Restaurant of course. Ballard was founded in 1880 as the location of a Wells Fargo stage line station, being named after William Ballard, the former proprietor, who ran the station from 1862 to 1870. Next Red found its way to Santa Ynez where it visited the Historical Museum and Carriage House and was lucky enough to sit among the stagecoaches of the past! Then it moseyed down to the Maverick Saloon and placed a dollar on the ceiling, a tradition that has been in place for decades. The Red Chair eventually found its way to Los Olicos and stopped at the historic Mattei's Tavern, established in the 1880's. A stop at Pea Soup Andersens was a MUST. Made famous in the 1920's as a road stop to weary travelers along highway 101, the pea soup became its bestselling attraction and has been known to sell 500-600 gallons of Pea Soup daily! It is located along Avenue of the Flags in Buellton, CA and is dedicated to our nation's veterans. Next Red was off to Beckman Winery, one of the many wineries established in the Santa Barbara wine country. Here, the east-west orientation of the coastal mountains forms valleys opening directly to the Pacific Ocean, this unique topography allows for the flow of fog and ocean breezes to shape distinct micro-climates, perfect for classic grape varietals and world class wines! Before the trip back to the Inn, Red insisted on visiting the Firestone Walker Brewery for a quick sampling of their delicious brews. On the way back they made a stop to Solvang, Danish Capitol of America and also spent some time on the stage with PCPA Theaterfest, which has been providing exemplary theater and training for 50 years! As for a final thrill for the Red Chair, Santa Ynez Wine Country Cycling took Red for a joy ride to focus on the emerging cycling scene that has been highlighted in the last several years by the Amgen Tour. So much to do in so little time! Ballard will definitely need a second visit!
The Malibu Bella Vista
Calabasas, Ca
June 2-5th, 2014
The Malibu Bella Vista sits within Malibu Canyon and is surrounded by scenic views! The first day the Red Chair was up and ready to get moving. Red wanted to try out some of the hiking trails Innkeeper Michael had suggested that were located close by but it was so hard to just choose one out of the many in the area including Backbone Trail, and all of the other trails located within the near by Malibu Creek State Park, so they did a little of a few different ones! After the hike it was nice to be able to kick back and just take in the beautiful views from the deck at the Malibu Bella Vista. The next day Red decided it was time to check out the beach, which was conveniently located only a short ten minute drive away. It was so nice that you could go from a mountain retreat to a seaside paradise in a matter of minutes! Escaping for the day to the gorgeous southern California coast was just what the Red Chair needed. In Malibu, Red noticed, there is always something to do, from swimming in the refreshing ocean, to relaxing in the sand, or eating a frozen dessert, it was just perfect. It was then back to the Malibu Bella Vista where Red lounged in their hot tub and watched the sun set on a perfect day.
Casa Laguna Inn & Spa
Laguna Beach, CA
May 20-23rd, 2014
The innkeepers of the Casa Laguna Inn and Spa were so very excited to show the Red Chair their connection to the local arts in the community, and boy was Red thrilled! Red got the opportunity to be photographed poolside at Casa Laguna with a professional bikini model, Giselle Osle, as well as in the iconic Bell Tower stairway. The Red Chair thought they complemented each other quite well! Next the Red Chair got the chance of a lifetime, an onstage performance with award-winning actor - dancer David Engel at the Laguna Playhouse. Casting Red last minute was no simple feat, but after learning more about the intrepid travelling chair the Playhouse crew and David himself were intrigued and enthusiastic about this collaboration of talents! Engel is currently starring on the playhouse stage with Leslie Caron in Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks through June 8th. Following this once in a lifetime experience Red and the Casa Laguna crew headed to the Pageant of the Masters shoot. The Pageant is Laguna Beach's most recognized venue and attracts visitors from around the world. This annual Pageant features large reproductions of famous works of art, with live models in costuming to match that of the original, holding perfectly still in place for up to five minutes. The Red Chair was allowed into the areas of Pageant ground never seen by the public. Red volunteered first as an assistant to the set painter (scenic artist David Cook, then on stage as an in-character stand-in for Madame X in the Portrait of Madame X. Finally Red imagined being on stage before hundreds of fans--sitting in...red chairs of course. Red was asked what it thought of the experience and commented on the magic of living pictures, "It's not smoke and mirrors, it's paint and light." Like all destinations before Casa Laguna the few magical days wound down and it was time for the Red Chair to move onto the next stop. That was when Red found out that there were surprise special arrangements to get Red from Laguna Beach to Catalina Island! Red got its very own Helicopter to take this famous chair to its next stop. Thanks to the Island Express Helicopters, Red made it safely from the hands of Kathryn of Casa Laguna to its new hosts Kathleen and Rock of The Avalon Hotel!
Hillcrest House Bed & Breakfast
San Diego, CA
May 16-19th, 2014
San Diego is a big Navy town so the first stop was the USS Midway Museum. Red explored the historic aircraft up close, flirted with the docents and dreamed of a chance encounter with a Top Gun aviator. Alas, no joy! However, next door to the Midway was the incredibly romantic statue, Unconditional Surrender. Red’s heart was pounding as it admired the 25 foot tall reenactment of a Times Square sailor stealing a kiss from a nurse at the end of World War II. To cool off, Red headed to San Diego’s brand new Waterfront Park for a dash through one of the fountains, very refreshing!
The next day, Red put on lots of sunscreen (red heads burn so easily!) and headed for SeaWorld. Having grown up on Cape Cod, the Red Chair always loved whale watching. But Red wasn’t prepared for all the up close and personal encounters with SeaWorld’s countless animals. Reds favorite exhibit was Dolphin Point. Those bottlenose dolphins were just so darned cute! Turtle Reef was literally a “cool” break from San Diego’s sunshine with mesmerizing exhibits showcasing dozens of sea turtles and endless tropical fish. An introduction to Duke, a 700 pound sea lion, topped off Reds day.
The last day in San Diego was spent at the world famous San Diego Zoo. What an awesome visit! Right inside the front entrance, Red was greeted by a peacock who was quite taken with Red. His awesome fan of tail feathers sprang open and he strutted in front of Red to catch its attention. Red also enjoyed cuddling with stuffed flamingos while gazing over the real thing, a nesting flock of bright coral feathered beauties. But the highlight of the day was being granted a personal audience with one of the zoo’s animal ambassadors, a 14-year-old cheetah named Kabuli and her constant companion, a dog named Bear. The regal Kabuli sat on Red’s humble wooden seat as the zoo’s national spokesperson, Rick Schwartz, talked about the cheetah breeding program. Red left the zoo with a new respect for the dedication of people around the world who work so hard to sustain animal diversity.
While the days were red hot, and the nights were incredibly restful at the Hillcrest House Bed and Breakfast. Red chose to stay in the Coronado Room (decorated with its favorite red colors) so Red could relax in the jetted tub. Owner Ann Callahan and her dog Callie entertained Red in the evenings on the porch, enjoying the sea breeze. Ann was a fountain of information about the local eateries, brew pubs, entertainment, and shops in the Hillcrest neighborhood. Red definitely wants to return and take in the night life!

The Bed and Breakfast Inn at La Jolla
La Jolla, CA
May 12-15th, 2014
The Red Chair finally arrived at the Bed and Breakfast Inn at La Jolla only to be greeted with a huge warm welcome, a glass of wine and cheese to nibble on while Red was shown to a peaceful spot among beautiful gardens to relax. Red could totally get used to this! After the Red chair checked out the infamous beach where seals, famously, during mating season take over the La Jolla Children's Pool (unfortunately no seals this time but still cool) Red and its escort headed to the La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art, just steps from the Inn. The Museums combination of beautiful sculptures along with one of the most dramatic ocean views of the La Jolla Coast left the Red Chair in awe and speechless. After it was a quick visit to the La Jolla Tide Pools, where Red surprisingly slipped and fell legs over seat into a tide pool the size of a bathtub! Such a cool place to wander but make sure you watch where you step! The second day of the Red Chair had quite a bit on its itinerary for the day! Starting off with a three course breakfast at the inn, including mimosas, Red felt ready to conquer the day. First stop was the "Sunny Jim Sea Cave" named by Frank Baum, the author of Wizard of Oz, for the entrance's resemblance to the 1920's character and mascot for the British Force Wheat products named "Sunny Jim". A trek definitely worth taking, the caves take you 145 steep steps down into the bowels of the earth along the narrow and hand hewn corridor. With a few more stops to places such as La Jolla Shores Beach to Kayak with the La Jolla Kayaking Rental Comanpy, a wine tasting at one of the best local wineries, Orfila Vineyards, in North San Diego County, a stop at the Safari Animal Park, a trip to Julian for apple pie and the Chocolate Bombe at Chef Charles's Candied Apple Bakery, the Spencer Valley School house circa 1890's for a craft project assignment with the local students for an upcoming production, Air Sailing at Warner Springs and lastly a to visit The Camel Dairy where Red met Cleopatra and her handsome young companion rounded out the end of this busy day. Interestingly, the Camel Dairy makes lush beauty products and chocolates made from camels' milk! Unfortunately Red's escort received a phone call regarding the wild fires that quickly ended the adventuring that day. Red's escort had a wild fire break out dangerously close to her home, Red was happy to help in anyway it could. So for that night Red stayed with her and her family as a silent but comforting presence. The last day was back to exploring and first stop of the day was to the Stephen Birch Aquarium for the feeding of the sharks! Once hungry for lunch, they headed to The Herringbone for an amazing five star experience. To wind down the day Red took a sunset stroll along La Jolla shores and watched the sunset on this rather exciting adventure filled with unexpected surprises.
The 1906 Lodge at Coronado Beach
Coronado, CA
May 8-11th, 2014
The Red Chair, and its red suitcase full of mementos gathered along the way, arrived to The 1906 Lodge at Coronado Beach by the innkeepers of Europa Inn, in Temecula, CA. The beautiful 1906 Lodge is a 17-room boutique B&B in the seaside town of Coronado, CA. Originally a boarding house, The 1906 Lodge was renovated and reopened in 2009 just two blocks from the world-famous Coronado Beach. Homemade breakfast, happy hour, underground parking, and internet access were all included in Red's stay at this charming location. And Red sure enjoyed the personalized and attentive service from each of the innkeepers, who were quick to take it on a whirlwind tour of Coronado!
First stop, City Hall for a photo op with Coronado Mayor Casey Tanaka. While in Coronado “Red” was also photographed as it sat on stage during Lamb’s Players Guinness World Record-breaking “100 Hours of Stories”. Red also wandered alongside Coronado public art, met the nicest residents and visitors of Coronado, and enjoyed the beautiful weather with its feet in the sand and its head in the clouds. Frequent reminders of the Red Chairs notoriety happened each time the group was asked, “Hey, is that the Red Chair?” This sure is one lucky red chair!

The Inn at Europa Village
Temecula, CA
May 4-7th, 2014
The Red Chair was a bit too tired to get up for the breakfast experience the first morning. You know traveling takes a lot of out of an old chair, but Red did get to help Chef Dean later that morning with some food prep for a special event before meandering down the hill to check out Europa Village Winery. Red was excited to meet Dr. Doug the well known (locally) Wine server and Wine Educator who shared wines of 3 different labels representing the wine styles of 3 different old world European countries (Italy, France & Spain). Red was so enthusiastic about all of the wine varietals and after spending time at the winery the Red Chair decided to head back to the INN at Europa Village for a siesta in a hammock on the patio with a gorgeous view of the vineyard below.
The next morning with an INN full of guests Red had its first Chef Dean breakfast "experience" with 2 courses taking Red through Switzerland on the way to Spain, delicious! The Red Chair spent some more time during the next few days at the Inn playing Jenga on the veranda and having its photo taken with dogs and polo ponies when the local Temecula Valley Polo Club brought their ponies to the winery for a photo shoot. Red took a tour through the vineyard and then relaxed on the deck of one of the suites at the INN in the late afternoon. When it comes time to move onto the next stop Red always gets a little sad but the adventure must continue on. Red had so much fun here it will definitely be back again someday.

Strawberry Creek Inn Bed & Breakfast
Idyllwild, CA
April 29th - May 3rd, 2014
The Red Chair absolutely loved the drive to the Strawberry Creek Inn B&B, it could have just stopped and sat there all day (Red is after all very good at sitting). Although a beautiful ride, Red was anxious to arrive and meet its wonderful hosts. A large "Welcome to Idyllwild -- Home of Adventure, Music, Art and Harmony" sign stood tall to greet the lucky travelers who entered through the southern gateway into town, and Red was ready to get started! Innkeepers Ian and Rodney greeted Red with wide open arms and showed Red to the San Jacinto Room, which will be home for the next few days. Out on the grounds native wildflowers were in the early stages of arriving for the season as well as blossoming trees soon to bear all kinds of delicious fruits. With a recommendation of a calming nature walk along the creek into town, Red hit the ground running, hoping to explore and experience some of the very best Idyllwild could offer.
First stop was to a two story collection of shops affectionately known as The Fort. While window shopping, Red decided to stop into the Idyllwild Soda Pop & Sweets/Remember When Toys to indulge in the nostalgia of long-forgotten soft drinks, candy and toys! Next Red stopped into a place called Himalayan Treasures that held such unique and beautiful hand-crafted pieces of jewelry, fabric art, wall hangings, Tibetan bowls and so much more! Coyote Red's was just calling the Red Chair's name with their delicious jerky, Amish Foods, hot sauces, snacks, popcorn, BBQ sauces, Rubs, and Jams.. YUM! Next it was back to the Inn to check out the certified National Wildlife Federation Backyard Habitat, try a bit a bee charming with their onsite honeybee hives, and then meet the Inn's supermodel laying hens! Ending the day with a nice glass of wine from the Idyll Awhile Wine Shoppe was just perfection.
The Red Chair continued to revel in the arts, nature and culture here over the next two days! Red made a trip to visit the Acorn Gallery that features over 45 artists, most being local, and stopped at the Lily Rock Native Gardens that promotes sustainability in landscaping. Red also visited the Dore's Mountain Art Center that beautifully combines Idyllwild's two main passions -- art and nature. Red could not possibly have experienced everything Idyllwild has to offer in just three short days, but from what it did experience Red has absolutely fallen in love with this special place.

Serendipity Ranch Bed & Breakfast
Oak Glen, CA
April 24-28th, 2014
After a long trip from Prescott, AZ, the Red Chair finally has made it to California with stop number 100 being the Serendipity Ranch Bed and Breakfast and the Historic Apple Growing Community of Oak Glen! Instantly Red felt right at home, relaxing on the serene and secluded grounds full of gardens and large shade-providing willow trees perfect to enjoy tea and a good book beneath on a warm day. The Red Chair found the pond where it watched the Koi fish swim in lazy circles around the dock and just enjoyed the beautiful weather. Red heard that there were miniature horses in the stables, so of course Red went to say hello to them too. After Red headed to check out more of the grounds including the old bridge.
The next day after an amazing nights rest, Red was taken on a tour of the 5 mile loop that is Oak Glen, CA. First up was a trip to Riley's Farm Colonial Chesterfield and the Revolutionary time period. Red joined the reenactments including the Patriot's Battle Cry, defending the tavern against the oncoming British Red Coasts and at the end of the day Red stood proudly amongst the assembly of township and country flags listening to a rousing patriotic speech for freedom and liberty. After that it was back to the Serendipity Ranch for some night-time star gazing.
First thing the next morning Red was off to visit Riley's Apple Farm #1. Red learned the grounds were of an early 1800's settlers era with a cabin, saw mill, hand hewn water wheel and cider press! It was really interesting to get an up close and personal view of early pioneer life.
Next it was to check out The Homestead, a beautiful wedding venue. Being a true romantic, Red had to check it out of course! The rustic archway with the mountain backdrop was just stunning. Walking through the old rustic doors below the towering old water tank, Red loved every bit of this surrounding beauty and thought how perfect this was with the charming old buildings and grounds dotted with farm implements of years gone by. Next on the itinerary was the Oak Glen School House Museum, followed by the Los Rios Rancho for some fun country entertainment and dinner, followed by the Wildlands Conservatory, 1898 Snow-Line Cider Mill, Law's Coffee Shop and lastly a trip to the Oak Tree Village for some shopping, a visit to the bakery and even their animal zoo!
With so many places to see, the Red Chair did not get to spend as much time as it would have liked but the good thing is the amazing innkeepers at the Serendipity Ranch helped Red to see and quickly experience some of the many highlights of this beautiful place. We guess Red will just have to come back!
