What is the Red Chair?
The Red Chair is a symbol, a movement, a phenomenon, a happening. Not just a simple wooden chair, this bright red vintage objet is moving from place to beautiful place, exploring the best of America from sea to shining sea.
Move aside Flat Stanley, lie down garden gnome, hang yourself out to dry traveling pants… the Red Chair has arrived and captured our hearts and minds. This humble desk accoutrement, crimson paint peeling and wooden legs wobbling, is journeying across the whole USA (and parts of Canada!) building connections, meeting innkeepers and generally exploring some of the most beautiful corners of our world.
The Red Chair’s story started on Cape Cod, where in the spring of 2012 it started by visiting the finest inns of the Cape. This lucky chair surfed the waves off Nantucket, explored the cranberry bogs of Chatham, enjoyed the view from Nobska Light in Falmouth, watched the grist mill turn at Stony Brook in Brewster and the sun set over Menemsha. Later that year, the chair traveled all over New England, from Maine to Rhode Island all on the kindness of America's friendly B&B's.
And now the Red Chair is back on the move! The cross country journey commenced back in June of 2013 in Woods Hole, moving south through the mid-Atlantic, heading west in Georgia and crossing through Texas to California. The Red Chair caught it's first glimpse of the Pacific Ocean in late spring 2014, traveled north through international territory, all the way to Alaska for 2016.
With over 250 inns and bed & breakfasts involved SO FAR in this cross country journey, the Red Chair is making new friends and many many memories everywhere it ventures. Make sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter for updates from each stop.
This website is devoted to capturing this unique journey in words and photos so be sure to check in every few days as the Red Chair doesn’t stay in any one place too long!
Don’t we all need a little Red Chair in our lives?
